Palacio Vistalegre

A great event-venue with a liftable roof system in Madrid

The “Palacio Vistalegre” in Madrid was originally built as a bullring. In the late 1990s, it was converted into a multipurpose arena with a capacity for 14,000 spectators which now can be used for music concerts and sports events. The venue received a unique, lens-shaped membrane roof that can be inflated. It is supported by 12 columns, and can be lifted up to a height of 12 m.

ECCON was appointed with developing the hoisting system, which consists of 12 winches that raise the roof via a cable drive system. It takes just a few minutes to open the massive roof. The system allows fresh air to enter and circulate within the arena — a huge benefit in hot Spain.
